‘It’s a crummy industry’: CEO of Dallas airline that relocated from California thinks he has a $1B idea

Alex Wilcox was always fascinated with flight. As a kid, he spent hours and hours on planes crossing the Atlantic Ocean to visit his European grandparents.

“Frankly, I loved the trip just as much as the destination,” Wilcox said. “I just loved to fly.”

He eventually got his pilot’s license at 16 and spent his summers fueling planes at a Vermont airport. Aside from a dalliance with managing a rock band (The Naildrivers) for a couple of years after college, Wilcox has spent his whole life in the world of aviation.

And he doesn’t like what the industry has become.

“It’s no secret that everybody hates air travel today,” Wilcox said. “It’s a crummy industry, and it’s not customer-focused, and it’s over-consolidated, and the airlines don’t seem to give a crap about the quality of their product and the quality of their service.”

That gave Wilcox an opportunity. He runs two businesses. JetSuite is a traditional charter jet company that launched in 2009. But a couple of years ago, a new service launched called JetSuiteX where people buy individual seats on private jet-sized planes.
