Austin Airport Expansion

As Austin airport expansion nears finish line, a much bigger project is in the works

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is a critical piece of the region’s red-hot economy. It determines how easily executives can conduct business in other places around the world, as well as how many visitors our city can handle for major events like South by Southwest and the Formula One U.S. Grand Prix that generate millions of dollars.

So the current expansion of the facility and its long-term viability are major points of interest for business leaders. A new $350 million terminal is entering the final phase of construction. Designed by architecture firm Gensler, it will add nine gates east of the existing Barbara Jordan Terminal and boost the airport’s capacity from 11 million passengers a year to 15 million.

The new terminal will also have 29,000 square feet of retail space and amenities such as an outdoor, shaded terrace for watching planes take off and land. Check out the gallery with this story to see how the terminal is envisioned at completion, as well as some photos of how it looks now.

The 175,000-square-foot east terminal is expected to open in the spring, said Derick Hackett, a senior public information specialist for the Aviation Department.
