3 cities win jobs after Amazon’s wild HQ2 contest

Amazon.com Inc. made it official Tuesday, announcing plans to split its highly coveted second headquarters between the Washington, D.C. and New York City areas.

Crystal City — rebranded in Amazon’s announcement as “National Landing” — and Long Island City in Queens will each ultimately get more than 25,000 Amazon HQ2 employees as part of the deal.

In addition, Amazon announced it selected Nashville for a new Center of Excellence for its Operations business, which is responsible for the company’s transportation, supply chain and other activities. That site will receive 5,000 jobs.

This means Austin is out of the running. It was one of 20 finalist locations vying for the $5 billion project.

“We want to thank our partners for helping the Austin region be one of the 20 finalist regions — no small feat,” the Austin Chamber of Commerce said in a statement. “One of the many positive outcomes from this process was an increase in interest from job creators around the world looking to relocate or expand in the Austin region.”
