Amazon HQ2 is out, but $1.2 billion still pouring into East Austin project with offices, hotels, shops

The smell of fresh paint wafted inside the new administrative headquarters at the Eightfold campus, where behind a glossy front desk oversized monitors greeted guests with the bright renderings of a mixed-use development slated to rise around the building as part of a campus estimated to cost more than $1 billion over eight years.

A few dozen employees clicked away on recently unpacked keyboards. They took turns using the restroom because there aren’t yet stalls around the new toilets. Two workers assembled furniture inside on a mock boardroom that will be used as a real-life example of the kinds of office space future tenants can expect to lease.

That was the scene this summer at ground zero of the Eightfold campus — a 100-acre site once marketed to Amazon.com Inc. that could hasten the pace of development between downtown and the far east side of Austin. Now more than a year after launching its plans, Eightfold Development is progressing steadily on its ambitious vision to transform the old Motorola campus off Ed Bluestein Boulevard into a wellness-centered oasis of office, retail space and amenity space. A 49-acre site nearby has also been earmarked for multifamily development.
